You need to look at your lifestyle and what you expect from a dog more than if it is good with kids. Most properly bred dogs are good with kids when raised properly.
God, I hope that person below is not trying to spell Newfoundland.
Only get a Newf if you like to goom daily, have a lot of room, like drool, like tipped water bowls, and love to spend more than most people on medications. They tend to knock kids over too. They are great with kids when they get older, but in the mean time, they are unaware of their size and tend to knock everything over.
Goldens are good with kids, but can be quite hyper when young, and also have some grooming needs. Require a lot of exercise and training.

German Shepherds are great, although they can be aggressive towards others if they are trying to hurt your family.
Goldens are sweet dogs, but are really hyper and require a ton of exercise. I have a golden (age 6.5) that still acts like a puppy.
Labs are really good dogs for people with young members of the family. They are loyal and have a lot of tolerance. they are also active when they should be, but are fine when they need to lay down and stay there.
Also, I would suggest a middle age dog (1-3 years) because they will most likly aleady have a bit of training and have calmed down a bit. With young members of your family a puppy is a lot of work, and if you get a older dog (4+ years) they already have habits you might not like.
And, males are good dogs because they are loyal, and will stay close to home. they tend to choose one of two people that are 'theirs'. Females are also great dogs, but they are more reserved and a lot cannot be trusted to stay put. They are more likely to wander away from home.

Hi :) We have 5 children in our family and they all love our 2 chihuahuas. I know that little dogs have a bad reputation, but ours have been great. Our oldest chihuahua follows our 11 year old son around everywhere and sleeps in his arms at night. Our youngest chihuahua is bad about bringing our 10 month old his doggie treats.Gross- I know , but it is a sign of good will on the dog's part:) They all get along great. I would highly recommend chihuahuas for children. Whatever type of dog you choose, I hope you and your family grow to love him as much as we love our dogs.

Go to a shelter and get one of the millions who need a home. Don't hang up on the breed. Remember that AKC standards have created breeds with common health problems while the muts usually do not have those problems.
