It's somewhat normal, just so long as kitty isn't sneezing or anything when awake. Some breeds are more prone to it as well. The persian for example, does it more than some other breeds. I have a manx that does it all the time and he is healthy. So, nothing to worry about unless there are other symptoms. :)

Is this something new, or has he always snored?

If it's a new thing and it continues for several days, I'd have a vet take a look at him. He could have a problem with his nose, lungs, or even heart.

If he always does this and is in good health, I wouldn't worry about it. Many cats and dogs snore. One of my cats is named Snuzzer because when he sleeps he makes a sound between a snore and a purr.

Just like Elaine, two of my four snore. One of them snores loud enough to wake herself up. The two non-snorers sleep in another room. None of these monkey-cats are overweight. They just snore.

My dog snores (really loudly, by the way) and there's nothing wrong with him, so I don't see why it would be strange if a cat snored.

Obesity can be a factor for a snoring cat.

Two of our four snore, they do that sometimes, just like dogs do it.
