Who can tell me what is a good buy. I want it mostly as a deterrent, so pump action, and if I ever have to use it i want non-lethal. Also, are rubber batons legal in NY? I think so but not sure. Tight on funds so ideally around 200 but could go up to 3 or 4.

in response to a few answers:

-I know rubbers can be lethal, depends where you place the shot.

-I don't have a family, It's just for myself

-You don't know me, I'm not a timid little guy who would be so scared he'd drop the gun and let the other guy grab it, even if its true that I don't want to be lethal

-I can guarantee you the person is not gonna shoot me after takin a rubber bullet to the stomach.

Really its just because I live in a college neighborhood and there's frats and mobs of people and frequent breakins to steal TVs and other petty stuff. Any one of these kids would turn and run at the sound of cocking a pump action. If I had to fire a few shots off, I don't wanna kill the kid maybe just scare him or take out a leg.

Look, nobody can be right because it is their own opinion. I didn't ask for opinions about if I should use rubbers. What I asked for was a good priced shotgun. I will never have to kill someone. One guy said that he has practiced taking a stomach shot and then putting a couple rounds on target - with a vest. I don't expect he or anyone else could do that without a vest, and I don't expect kids to come into my house with a vest on. Someone said rubbers are good for crowd control. Yes, I know exactly - That is part of what I'm concerned about. As I said, there's often mobs of kids around my block, frats, whatever, lookin to fight someone. I almost got jumped by 10 kids the other night on my own porch. I did not say I'm not willing to take a life, I just dont wanna look for the first excuse to take one. If I want to or need to I can and will, otherwise I won't. Thanks for the answers I think im gonna go with either a mossberg 500 (persuader) or that cheap beretta

Mossberg model 500, its cheap and its the only shotgun to meet military spec.

Yeah, those rubber bullets will kill at close range. Why would you NOT want to kill an intruder. I can just imagine you shooting a intruder with a rubber bullet and then him shooting you with a REAL bullet.

In home defense it is wise to choose the method for instant incapacitation. A shot gun is a good choice, however not loaded with rubber bullets.

Do you realize that the less lethal stomach shot is only about 4" low of a lethal chest shot? At 20' that's about 1/4" change in barrel elevation. Are you really that good of a shot? Under stress?
Unless you’re prepared to take a life you should not pick up a tactical firearm. If you do you should load for the quickest kill and train with your firearm as if your life depended on it.
Dead people don't sue and don’t hurt you. Just for fun call a personnel injury attorney and describe yourself as the guy that got shot with a bean bad or rubber slug, and to talk to a local law enforcement officer about the use of force.
if your assuming that the intruder is going to run at the sight of the gun....it sounds as though you are not mentaly prepared for what your talking about. and if you shot me with a rubber slug, I'd hit the gound like a sack of potatoes but you can bet that I'd draw, fire and put 2 JHPs mass dead center before you could rack another shell in (yes I have practiced this w/vest, could only stomach it once though).

If you want less lethal gut a tazer or a stun gun. I'm not sure about the rubber batons but cold steel makes a great self defense weapon called a sjambok that has a much longer reach than a baton.

I agree with some answers, that you don't sound like someone that should have a gun.
Get a can of pepper spray or an electric shocker or both.
Any gun that will shoot rubber rounds will also shoot regular shot shells. If 10 of them have jumped you they will have your new shotgun and the next time they will be armed. Forget that shotgun business

Most of the responders are right...if you are not willing to take a life protecting your ''stuff'', then just let it go...
if it makes you feel better, load the first round as a rubber, then 0 or 00 buckshot - remember how far this can shoot.

I can tell you're from NY, you really aren't obligated to explain anything. Moreover, you aren't obligated to protect anyone's life either. For my area, a Remington 12 guage sells at $264.00 from Walmart, it's dove season here.
Legally, if you own the house, you can do as you please.

There is nothing more lethal than a shotgun. If you are not willing to take a life if necessary, then DO NOT purchase any firearm. You are liable to have it taken away, and used against you or your family.
