Swedish and Norwegian are really similiar languages, if you speak Swedish to a Norwegian (or Norwegian to a Swede) he will understand most of what you're trying to say since the words are so similiar.. This would also mean that if you manage to learn Swedish it would be relatively easy to learn Norwegian afterwards.. (or the other way around).. Also, though it's not on your list, written Danish is also really easy to understand if you know Norwegian.. Swedish and Norwegian are, in my opinion, easy languages, with WAY EASIER grammar than Russian and Icelandic.. My experience with Dutch is that it's about as difficult as German, that would be medium difficulty (a bit tricky grammar).. I've been told by both native Russian speakers and by students of Russian that it's a really difficult language, and that the grammars are pure horror.. on the other hand, Russian is probably the most "important" language on your list, with more than 140 milllion native speakers. (in comparison, Norwegian and Swedish combined propably have less than 15 million native speakers.) I unfortunately have no knowledge of Polish..

I don't know Russian, but I know that it's one of the languages for which trained speakers are in demand today. It's rated as one of the difficult languages, so that would be one reason why there are not that many trained speakers. The other languages you listed are not a "critical language" like Russian.

All languages are good. Any of these would be nice for you. I suppose it depends on your goals for learning. Is it simply an intellectual exercise? In that case, any of them will do. Are you interested in traveling to places where these languages are spoken? If so, which of the places are you most likely to visit? And so forth. We can't really just randomly make the decision for you.

I haven't studied any of these, but I'd like to learn Russian, so I think that's a good pick. 2nd choice would be Dutch. but it'd be really cool to know Russian!

Why do you want to speak any of these languages? Do you have a need for them? Just speak English and you can get by almost anyplace.
