my corolla (AUTOMATIC) lags when i press the gas, when at a stop light i can floor the gas pedal and the car will take off, from the light at about 1mph, as the rpms rev up the car final shifts and starts moving, same problem when in traffic, once the car builds speed it is fine, on the freeway it rides fine at higher speeds 45+.

The answerer above is right, the car is not a drag racer, if this is a new issue, I'd make sure the car is tuned up properly. (Fuel filter, Spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor, it might also be worth a transmission oil & filter change)
I doubt the actual tranny is bad, the Toyota powertrains are exceptionally strong, however, if in fact the transmission is going, it would not be worth replacing it.

What you are experiencing is a worn out timing belt. The belt has stretched enough to throw off the timing of your valves and your ignition timing. It's basically trying to run your engine with no timing advance on acceleration. Get your timing belt changed before it snaps on you.

That car was not a dragracer when it was new sounds like a transmission problem that may cost more than the car is worth to repair correctly. I see new car shopping in your future.
