Look up your local craigslist online. You can often find all kinds of things people are giving up. Look under "free', but you could also make a request under the pets section for something in particular you need.

most dog food companies will offer free samples of dog food if you email them. You can also get free treat samples too.. some companies have a "birthday club" for dogs, and send them a small package of treats for their birthday.
advantage and fronline ussually have a "buy 6 get one tube free" special.
some pet food stores have a special where if you buy so may bags of premium food, you get a free bag.
