Why do you have to download linux on a cd?

Why do you have to download linux on a CD, or buy a linux CD? why can't you download it straight to your PC?

Hi, Linux is an operating system that is completely different from Windows and even though its based on Unix it still can't run on OS X because its a different operating system. You have to install it from a cd just like u would with any other operating system such as Windows or Mac OS X.

Because it doesn't run from within Windows. It runs separately.
