A lot of lighting work off of sensors. Others are on timers. You may even notice street lighting come on during a rain storm, when the sky turns dark. The purpose is for illumination when it gets dark. A safety factor.

Only since 1968? I thought it was as far back as old England with the guys walking around lighting the gas lamps.
