All of the above and anything else that you feel like doing that you love doing that takes your brain for a walk. Joining a therapy group - you don't have to be unwell to look at your mental health, and can always benefit from understanding yourself better as the world of processing always gives your brain some exercising wherever you are.
Oily fish or Cod liver oil is often praised as brain food and dark chocolate too helps.
When you need to be extra sharp take caffeine but not in coffee form as this is eventually very dulling. Having down time often, in the form of walking fairly briskly and not trying to think about anything plus power naps or five minute meditation or listening to a short relaxation tape is very good.
I do this and am often amazed to find the answer to something that has been troubling my mind by
meditating for a very short time.

The more you read and do cross word puzzles, and the like You can hold your sharpness of thought. The more good friends and acquaintances you have helps your mental health. Basically stay as literate as you can and have social contacts, should keep you young longer than not having them. Unless you have a chemical imbalance, then you're going to have it rough.

I suggest studying or researching depth psychology, as this is a branch of psychology that modern day society hasn't really consciously recognized yet and even traditional universities sort of skip right over it. The early origins of it began with Sigmund Freud and a couple other sharp fellas, then it was really thrust forward as a discipline, with the late Carl Jung. Basically, it seeks to make conscious the darker parts of the psyche that most people simply do not want to face. Hence, by confronting our weakest parts, we hold the key to approaching true mental wellness.

I must agree with yasmin, Sudoku really works. I carry a big book of these to work and work on some when I get a minute to sit down. Beats idle gossip anytime!
