Yeah if that's all you target. Truth be told more Christians are gay then Atheists because Christianity makes up the majority of the world.

It's not any ruder than asking a theist if they're gay.
Personally, I wouldn't be offended.
EDIT: Why not just flirt with them? If they're gay, they'll flirt back. If they're straight (or not into your) they won't.
I'm assuming you're gay because the only reason I can think of for wanting to know someone else's sexuality is to determine whether or not they would date you.

Well I do openely accuse one of my Atheist colleagues of being gay daily, and he accuses me of all sorts of things.
Seriously where I am from the Homosexuals I know even have a sense of humour about the subject.
