they should recieve army procedures and drills, so they have to work and learn how to respect people? would that not be better than letting them sit around ready to leave and do another crime..

AGREE FULLY: JUST FINISHED 22 YEARS IN PRISON SYSTEM IN ALABAMA AS AN OFFICER-- " NOW THE INMATES, THEY HAVE THEIR RIGHTS ALSO."
THEY WILL GO TO THE DOCTOR AND TELL S/HE THEY ARE HURTING AND S/HE WILL WRITE THEM A STOP UP FOR 6 MONTHS AND WE CANNOT DO ANYTHING TO THEM. THEN MEDICALLY AND LEGALLY THEY DO NOT HAVE TO WORK.
ABOUT THE CHAIN GANG ISSUES. TAKE THE NAACP SAID IT WAS AKIN TO SOUTHERN DAYS OF SLAVERY TO MAKE BLACKS WORK WHILE IN PRISON (SLAVE LABOR-OR FURTHERMORE IT WAS ILLEGAL TO MAKE ANYONE WORK FOR FREE LABOR?
(PARDON ME BUT DOES THE TAXPAYER STILL NOT FOOT THE BILL TO HOUSE INMATES? WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?)
THEN THE ACLU CAME IN TO STOP THE CHAIN GANGS AND ROCK BUSTING PILES WE HAD HERE IN ALABAMA. UP TILL 10 YEARS AGO ALL WAS FINE, THEN WE GOT SYMPATHETIC TO INMATES AND THE WAY THEY SHOULD DO TIME--ESPECIALLY FROM THE INMATES SIDE-WE ALSO GOT CRITICIZED FOR TAKING FEMALES OUT TO BUST ROCKS WITH SLEDGE HAMMERS--ALWAYS SOME BLEEDING HEART LIBERAL ORGANIZATION OUT THERE. NOW THE INMATES FIGHT AMONGST THEMSELVES, STAB EACH OTHER, WORK OUT ON THE WEIGHT PILE, PLAY BASEBALL, BASKETBALL AND WE HAVE LESS OFFICERS AND THREE TIMES AS MANY PRISONERS?
OH WELL THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITH ALL THE HOODS IN IT.

FOOT NOTE** IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN AND QUOTED "PRISONS HAVE BEEN AKIN TO THE ONLY FORM OF SOCIALIZED WELFARE LEFT IN OUR SOCIETY, WHY?

WELL THEY HAVE FREE ROOM, FREE BED, FREE CLOTHES, CLEAN CLOTHES, SHEETS, 3 MEALS A DAY (GOOD MEALS, FISH, MEAT, POULTRY,CORNDOGS, FRENCH FRIES, CHICKEN SUNDAYS, LIVER VEAL, LASANUGA, SHOWER FACILITIES, GYMNASIUM, LAW LIBRARY, READING LIBRARY, SCHOOLING, MEDICAL, EYEGLASSESS, TEETH, MEDICAL MEDICINES, EXAMS BY DOCTOR WHEN THEY HURTING, TECHNICAL TRADES AT SCHOOLS, WARM AIR IN THE WINTER AND SOME COOL AIR IN THE SUMMER, A COMMISSARY, A STORE WITH ICE CREAM TO BUY IF THEY HAVE MONEY SENT TO THEM, SUBWAY SANDWICHES, COOKIES ETC..
THE ONLY REALLY BIG DIFFERENCE I SEE IS THEY DO NOT GO HOME TO MOM AND DAD AT NIGHT(OH PARDON ME SOME DO???/ NOT REAL MOM AND DAD IF YOU GET THE DRIFT.)
THAT IS PRISON LIFE NOW A DAYS AND WE WONDER WHY THEY KEEP COMMING BACK 30 DAYS AFTER THEY ARE RELEASED FOR SOME 41% JUST KEEP ON COMMING BACK?
WOULD IT BE TOO DRASTIC TO SAY IF YOU COME BACK TO PRISON THREE TIMES, WE CAN ABORT YOU FROM SOCIETY??
I MEAN WE ABORT CHILDREN, AND THERE IS NO BIG STINK THERE? WHY NOT ABORT AN INMATE?
SUCH A NICE WORD "ABORTION FROM SOCIETY" LORD NOT THAT HORRIBLE DEATH PENALTY TOKEN WORD. ABORTION FROM SOCIETY? THINK ABOUT IT FOR A MINUTE NOW? WE SELECTIVELY SERVE NOTICE, YOU ARE A THREE TIME LOOSER AND WE ARE GOING TO ABORT YOU FROM OUR SOCIETY. AND IT WOULD BE LEGAL? IT WOULD SOLVE ONE PROBLEM "RECIDIVISM"

In my opinion, you're on the right track. Although I don't believe in militarizing already angry and violent men, I think that discipline, hard work, and an entirely new skill set are what inmates need. So while I don't think that army procedures are the answer, I do think that programs within prisons that create incentives for inmates to get their lives together would be good. The hopelessness of prison is what keeps people unreformed.

They are beginning to have alternatives to prison.
There is a ranch in northern nevada that raises cattle and farms. It reduces the cost to feed the prisoners and makes the inmates productive.
The sheriff that put the tents up in southern arizona has taken over the animal shelter and some of the prisoners are responsible for training the animals to be adopted. He has reduced the cost from double digit cost to single digit costs for the shelter and more animals are being adopted.
I do agree the violent offender (like the manson's of the world) need to be locked down 23 hrs a day.

These examples are far more productive then what you're suggesting.

My husband is in prison. I agree with "Dog Lover". Many of the problems inmates have when they are released are lack of education and work skills. Many people have great difficulties finding a job when they get out and have to go back to prison because they cannot get a job.

My husband wishes he could work while serving his time. Vocational programs are available to a handful of inmates. Most are not able to participate due to lack of funding and Correctional officers to oversee the programs. My husband is doing his time and knows that he made some mistakes. He is doing well and is looking forward to coming home, getting a job and being a productive member of society.

What I think is that they should be made to work 8 hours a day out side the prison in chain gangs like the old days. They could pick up trash, do community clean up and any other job that would benefit the community. Or, they could be found jobs that they have to leave prison to do and then come back. Of course, all of this is for non-violent offenders who are not a risk to the community.

For the violent ones, lock down 23 hours a day.. One hour outside in a secure court yard.. alone.. and one hour at the library to read or pick out books.

For all of them.. No television except National Geographic or a major news network.

But many places stop these practices because useless organizations like the ACLU said it was a violation of their rights to be made to work... Boooo ---Hooooo.

I agree to a point, they certainly should not receive all the privileges that they do, they should have to work for them and show that they can become responsible members of society, but with the do gooders around this will never happen. From what I can make out prison is more like a holiday camp than a punishment. There is little thought for their victims from so called do gooders.

Prison life should be made so horrible that, having been there once, any sane person would make sure they never returned. And to hell with 'Human Rights'.

When someone commits a crime warranting imprisonment, they should automatically lose the protection of the law.

That's my opinion, but it will never happen, of course. Society is too tolerant of crime.

Blah, blah, blah
I hope when one of you commits a crime (failure to obey an officer is a felony for example) you get to go to these harsh prisons you advocate for. Or don't forget that if you forget to return your kids to your ex you may have technically Kidnapped them (thats a felony too).

And, besides, most inmates have to work anyway.
