Caminar and Andar basically mean the same which is : to walk, to move.

When you use caminar in the past tense it is more easier to write than andar. Ex:
I walked = Camine
I walked = Anduve
Mostly today people use caminar.

"andar" is translated in every Spanish dictionary I've ever seen as "walk". But in my experience, a much better translation would be "to go around", as in:
"My brother goes around singing."
"Mi hermano anda caminando."
This can also explain why to ride a horse, bicycle, etc. is said using "andar a bicicleta", for example. It would be ridiculous to say someone walks on a bicycle. To go around on a bicycle makes much more sense.

"caminar" always refers to walking, for real.
