An oatmeal shampoo is very soothing, and it helps to moisturize which improves the dandruff. There are also excellent hypo-allergenic shampoos that are very, very gentle on the dogs skin.

Excessive dandruff can be a symptom of allergies (to dog food, fleas or inhalant/contact triggers such as pollen, dust, laundry detergents etc.).

You can find out more about dog skin allergies and find the best products (including shampoos) for dogs with sensitive skin at the url below.

Good luck

My dog had the dry skin, (she is a Pug) always itchy. Bathing in the Oatmeal soap for dogs helped. However, over time her hair fell out. Changed diet many times thinking it was causing it. Bought the Horse soap and the Horse sprays designed for the itchies. Just made matters worse. One thing that did help was to rub Olive Oil all over her, it soaks in and stops the itch and is natural. I keep a little bottle filled and marked for the dogs. Then we noticed fleas. Well, then went into the flea stuff. Well, over time nothing was helping. So to the vet we went. She has a bacterial skin infection. Has been given antibiotics, and antihistamines for the itching, new special bacterial killing soap and baths 2 times a week with this soap left on for 10 minutes, then rinsed in clear water. THIS was the best thing for her as she is doing much better. We also tried the BARF diet....my dogs won't eat raw beef period. Spent over 100 bucks for this raw natural, organic meat. Then had to cook it anyway. And there was no change in them at all. Cept they loved the cooked beef. This was more expensive meat than my Husband and I eat. Geezzzz....that meat was 10 bucks a lb. We are back to boiled turkey and rice, or ground beef and rice. I do add a teaspoon of dry beef broth powder, and a couple of tablespoons of dry milk powder. The right oils for them will help, just like humans there are good oils and bad. Good Luck to you....as it has been a rollercoaster ride here with her, and then the huge Vet bill. Which I should have done in the first place, then it may have only cost me $150.00 instead of $700.00 as she developed an ear infection and eye infection. Be careful and good luck

Something with oatmeal, or you can also see if there is a dandruff shampoo for dogs. Don't use people shampoo, as it was made for people, not dogs.

And make sure to rinse all the soap off, as any that you don't get off can irritate the skin even more. Soap usually stays on last underneath and where the legs meet the body.

Dandruff can also be caused by other things--you may need to change the diet for one, or add supplements.

Well, time for a trip to the vet to see why her skin is dry. Could be vitamins are lacking, fungus or just the breed. I can recommend using avoderm, but that it tenative until you hear what the vet says. Also, very important make sure to bath in warm water and rinse off ALL of the shampoo and other products.

You should only bathe a dog once a month and that's only on a need to happen basis. When you bathe them it strips off the natural oils a dog has on their coat. I worked for an old-school vet who always recommended giving a tablespoon of rendered bacon fat (grease) on their dog food once a week.

You can attack the problem externally and/or internally. They have dandruff shampoo for dogs, but you could also try supplementing your dog's diet with fish oil and vitamin e.
