keep my cat from climbing up my barstools and onto my counter

Cats can and do go vertical. If something is off limits, get yourself a roll of clear 2 inch wide packing tape (NOT duct tape) and pull 10" sections off, cut them, lay them sticky side up on the counter (or top of the computer, fish tank, book case, dresser, anywhere you don't want them) and let the 'tape monster' do it's work.

They learn that something sticky resides up there, it can wrap around them, and you're not going to take it off till they wear it for 10 or 15 minutes. Since you're not associated with them triggering the tape, they treat this as a learning experience and stay off the place.

Keep replacing the tape for up to a week. Even the dumbest cats will learn in that amount of time. It's cheap, won't hurt the cat other than a small bit of fur off them, and they remember it.

Here again, I'm not a big fan of the squirt bottle. It only addresses the symptoms of unwanted behavior, not the cause and your cat will learn to fear you.

The citrus smell solution does repel cats. Perhaps the bigger problem is finding something more constructive (from your kitty's point of view) for him to do instead of climbing on your barstools and counter. Scrap PVC tubing is relatively inexpensive and can provide hours of entertainment and exercise for your cat. Fish tanks are like cat TV. Catnip will keep him both stimulated and out of the way when he plays with that and interesting chase toys will have his feet on the floor instead of climbing.

Cats don't only live at floor level, they use vertical space too. This is why they like climbing and being up high. The best thing to do is to offer your cat an alternative like a cat tree or even a book case, that they are allowed to sit on. Everytime your cat gets onto the stool or the counter, tell them "no" and take them to the item you want them to climb on to. Reward them with a food treat. They're clever animals and quickly adopt behaviour that benefits them. The web link below has suggestions for giving cats vertical space indoors.

Spray bitter apple in the bar stool legs and seat and put fresh citrus on the counters. Cats hate the smell.

If that doesn't work, put double stick tape on your counters. Cats hate sticky.

When you see them start to do climb up, correct it immediately and consistently.
