You may need a different cable to connect your PS3 to your computer if it didn't alreay come with one. I have a wireless router that I connect my Xbox 360 to which does the job just fine. You may want to try that if you have one.

You cannot hook up to the internet with your PS3 using a USB cable. All game consoles just don't accept this because not many people use this method. I can't hook my PS3 online because my computer is too far from my PS3 and I can't move them to be closer. I guess I'll just need to figure a way outta that.

i had the same problem your going through when i bought the system but don't worry its so easy to solve it. you'll need an Ethernet cable that goes from ur ps3 to ur wireless modem or the phone socket where your internet is conected at. than just login and update ur system.. if u plug it in ur socket then ull be able to use just ur ps3 or internet but if u have a wireless modem ull be able to do both things simultaneously..

Try plugging the ethernet cable into your modem and your ps3. Or try to get wifi signals, if you have wireless.

Also, the ps3 is only $400 now for a 40GB, so it's not that expensive.

I suppose, that the cable, which goes into modem is ethernet RJ45. You take this cable, plug into router (small box from PC store ~35$, tell the salesman, that you need a router with VPN support). Than you plug cable, that runs into your modem into router's WAN. Than you connect your PC's modem and your PS3 to router's channels. Follow the insructions. It's easy.

it doesn't matter if your computer uses usb...your computer has a ethernet port...just use the computers ethernet port then run network setup on the computer and enable the ps3 to use the internet....then run setup on the ps3 for wired connection..
