Discuss this with your vet. He or she should be interested in your observations and suggestions. Talk with you vet about food too. There are prescription diets available for diabetic cats, but your cat may also have special needs related to her age. Together you & your vet should be able to come up with the best routine for your beloved kitty.

Sounds like your cat has a gum infection. I strongly suggest taking her to a vet immediately as this sort of problem is easily solved but can become very serious if left untreated. On the bright side, cats can cope perfectly well without any teeth. I had a cat that always had bad teeth and gradually had them all removed until about the age of 12 when the final 2 were taken out. He happily lived for another 4 years and soon after he lost the last teeth his gums were hard enough for him to happily eat dry food - he even brought in a rat once! (although I can't be sure whether he killed it or just found it)

Ask your vet about changing the time or the dose. It's possible two smaller doses may work better for her. Is it Lantus? That's a 12 hour insulin, most are shorter.
Use a high protein food with low carbs.
We feed ours a little of baked chicken (no bones or coating, no salt, it's cooked), along with a 1/4 of a can (small can) of 9-Lives Super Supper (their lowest carb food) and Royal Canin Siamese 38. The dry Evo gave everyone the runs, even when we toned way back on it, the stuff was too rich for them. I've also tried Wellness and Wysong Vitality. We had the best results with the Royal Canin Siamese.
The Purina DM (prescription food) was very good but ours had an allergy to something in it. I would recommend it though.

RE:
my cat has diabetes. What do you think is the best food for her. She is 14 yrs. old.?
I give her an insulin inj. inn the a.m. as Dr. said. But all day she
is lethargic & doesn't come to "life" until the later P.M. It seems
that giving her the inj in the P.M. would be better, as the test show it takes almost 8 hours to really get into her system.
Any suggestions? ...

Hi Kara
Read my profile and contact ,me as I have alot of info to part to you. The best food for your cat is canned foods with under 10% carbs. Moist likely if your cat did not have a steroid shot, your cat got diabetes from eating dry foods which are loaded with carbs.
This is NOT a death sentence, no life span lost and you can have your whole cat back if you treat this correctly
Unfortunately, many vets are not up to date on treating this and some treatments can be very dangerous.
Did the vet tell you to test for ketones> How to watch for hypoglycemic attacks? Teach you about hometesting? Please contact me as this is my expertise so I can help you treat this disease correctly. Let me know the type of insulin you are giving, how much and how many times a day + what you are feeding now
Your cat should be getting 2 injections a day as NO insulin lasts 24 hours in a cat and it is rare a cat can get by with 1 shot expecially in the beginning
Most vets DO NOT know what food is best as they get their info from the food companies

typically diabetic pets do get insulin injections twice daily. you should discuss concerns with your vet. as far as what to feed kitty, you want a food that is high protein and low carb. a grain free diet such as wellness core is a good one. to find an ideal diet, compare the nutrtional values of a special diabetic diet such as purina dm or hills m/d and then the quality food of your choice.
Food- Protein, Fat, Carbs, Fiber (g), Phosph (mg), Calories
per cup
M/D- 43, 44, 13, 1.3, 178, 480
Purina DM (CNM-DM)- 50, 37, 13, 0.3, 373, 592
Wellness Core- 47, 42, 11, .6, 338, ?

I totally agree, these are things you and your vet need to discuss. We lost our 14 yr old cat to diabetics a few yrs ago, I know what you are going through. You want her to have not only a long life, but a good quality of life. My best to you both.

Maybe you should take your cat back to the vets. Tell him what food should you give the cat, or read on it.
