I'm 42 next week and I bet I couldn't put in a bucket a hand full of names of people who I knew 20 years ago that I know now. So what does this mean? Let me put it this way. I was blessed with gobs of talent and have been very fulfilled in my life. I'm a musician who never got famous, but probably has influenced the whole picture in some way because I've played with so many people who DID pursue a path of fame. Did anyone I know get famous? Not really, but my point is this- I always have played from my heart, where many of my friends, band mates, studio colleagues etc. seemed to follow trends., suck up to management, try too hard to 'get an audience'...
After listening to some old tapes of my musical journey I realized that success all comes down to delivery to the right people at the right time. You better have the goods, and remember- NEVER waste good 'chops' on people who would sooner steal you blind than give you credit. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS GET YOURS.

I think what you know - for accurate knowledge -generates a wide selection of different people that you know. People will come to trust your honesty and accuracy and tell others of these qualities.
But of course if you have a legal/political problem, then you need both knowledge and contacts to smooth wrinkles. As this is the system we have for 200+ years (just in USA, older in "old country") and it will not be changing to utopia any time soon. 'You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours' is a very powerful and old way of doing business - even in animal/plant world.
Still I hold what you know as better, cleaner -plus learning/doing things is fun. Who you know can have people searching in your trash and taking pictures of you all day and night. No thank you.

Who you ARE gets you in the door (this may include who you know, and who knows you.)
What you know keeps you there.
