Consciousness. Physical incarnations (in combination with the brains' evolution over time) gradually give you a greater degree of 'awareness of being' the observer of your mind/body system rather than identifying with the learned ego identity which forms primarily during early childhood in each lifetime. You are right that eventually the soul shows itself through the accumulated character (wisdom) of a person. Have you ever met someone you could swear was a fern or even a cactus last time???:) Most animals, lacking our massive thinking brain, do not develop beyond the level of a young human child. Notice their behavior. This should give you some pause as to your own 'imprinted' ego identity and how important it is to psychologically transcend it, to ultimately achieve the experience of 'full aliveness.' It is what we are here for.

When a soul enters a body at birth, the soul is like a seed being planted.
The seeds are scattered. Some fall on rock and never take root. These seeds grow not into plants, but after a time are eaten by the birds. Then the birds deficate them onto soil where re-incarnated, the seeds my get chance to grow.
Some of the seed falls on tiled soil. They get nutrient (the words of God) and begin to grow into a small tree. Yet if weeds grow around the tree (like life's setbacks) and prevent light reaching the tree, it may die from nutrient suffercation and become choked. Such soul's are devoured by the worms and endure much suffering. They are like the soul's whom hear the words of God and understand the teachings yet whom decide not to sacrifice through service to God. Instead they choose to sacrifice their efforts for self reward. The world devour's them.
Other seeds avoid being choked by weeds and grow into a tall tree that becomes a home for all the birds in the sky.
WHAT IS A SOUL
God has 2 main catagories of energy
1) Internal energy
2) External energy
When they mix, the result is
3) Marginal energy.
God creates 2 kingdoms, one spiritual eternal kingdom, and one material kingdom. The material kingdom is made of external energy and has the characteristic of gradual decay over time. That is why all things in the universe age, because of decay.
The spiritual kingdom is created out of Gods internal energy which does not decay. All living soul's are made of such internal energy.
When souls are made, they are only seeds. They have free will, but must mature to learn how to use it. In this way, baby souls are put in the material world, manifest into material bodies. The material body consists of your senses, your organs and your CNS/mind.
The personality and mental attributes are all dictated by the workings of the mind, however the soul can control the mind as a driver can control the car.
If the soul refuses to control the mind, then the mind will please the body and its senses.
When the soul suffer's, it learns and grow's. This is because when people suffer they turn to scripture to understand themselves.
As the human mind is powerful, if the soul refuses to control the mind, it can do great damage.
Whilst animals allow their senses to control their bodies, they only think to satisfy their basic survival needs. The human mind seeks to always get more than it needs if the soul does not control the mind.

If you study the hebrew word for creature in Gen 9:10 which is "nephesh" you will find that this word is the same hebrew word for soul, (nephesh), in Gen 2:7
" And the LORD God formed man *of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living SOUL."(Gen 2:7)
"And with every living CREATURE that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth."(Gen 9:10)
In Numbers you will find that the word "body" is the english translation of the word "nephesh".
"11 ¶ He that toucheth the dead BODY of any *man shall be unclean seven days."(Num 19:11)
In Numbers chapter 9:11 it makes it clear that it is possible to touch a "dead body" which is the equivalent to touching a "dead nephesh" or "dead soul". They are all the same.
In Ezekiel chalpter 18:20 you will find that the Bible states plainly that a soul, "nephesh", can die.
" The SOUL that sinneth, it shall DIE. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him."(Eze 18:20)
The Bible plainly states that you are a living soul, "nephesh", and that the soul dies.
Conclusion: Man and animals are souls. They do not possess souls, a soul is not "put" into a body. Body and soul are exactly the same entity.
Many christians and non-christians alike think that soul and spirit are one and the same entity, but the Holy Bible does not support this theory.
The proof that soul and spirit are not equivalent is found in the hebrew and greek words for soul and spirit. There are separate words for soul and spirit in the hebrew and greek. Never in the Bible are these hebrew and greek words interchanged.
In other words, the hebrew word for soul is "nephesh" and the hebrew word for spirit is "ruwach". Never is nephesh found to be translated as "spirit". It is ONLY translated "soul". Likewise the hebrew word for spirit is NEVER translated soul. The same holds true for the greek.
Soul and spirit are not the same. The hebrew and greek proves it.
It is like the words dog and cat. The words dog and cat are not interchangeable. If you own a dog, you would not tell someone that you own a cat.

Your soul is your essence, your inner being your true self I suppose. Its all your energy. I also think that Animals have souls because they dont know about evil they just have instinct, but some animals like pets for instance seem to connect better with their owners., you could say that is because they are domesticated but I think its because they respond to love, as do we all. I would like to think that every living thing has a soul , we are all made up of energy the more we give the more we receive, our energy grows and so does our soul, if we feed it with the truth. You must have heard the expression " my soul cries out for love etc" I presume this means, I really need this. Your right in saying that it is like the character of a person but I think it obviously goes deeper than that, its your true essence deep inside.

It's your subconscious. Other mammals have them also. Other life forms might also but I'm unsure on that. It might take having two brain lobes to have one.
