I have some 12 gauge ammo--No. 4 Buck, 27 pellets, 1325 fps, 2 3/4 inch shell, marketed as Law Enforcement Buckshot. What is this ammo designed for? What's the effective range? Is it OK for hunting use?

It is excatly what the box said, a man stopper. Its too big for squirrels and rabbits and such, and too small for deer. You can use it to shoot things like coyotes up to 40 or 50 yards. It will kill it pretty easily as long as you arent too far away.

A 2 3/4 inch 12 GA.shell loaded with No. 4 Buckshot contains 27 pellets of 0.24 inch diameter, usually loaded to 1,325 Feet per second velocity. It is a "high-density" personal defense load used most often and effectively by police departments. The 27 pellets provide a greater possibility of effective hits over the 12 pellets contained in 00 Buckshot shells of 2 3/4 inch length..

The ammo will work for deer with a full or imp modified choke. Keep the range inside 20 yards. There are better shells for hunting but #4 buck is what we used from 20 foot tree stands. It is also OK for home defense but again there are better shells for that as well.

I use #4 for Turkey. I also handload a duplex of #4 and some #6 in the same shell.

#4 is a bit light for what I would want to use for self defense.

2 is typically used for deer, 4 is a bit light for deer, might be good for turkey, goose, 6 for squirrel, rabbit, 7 1/2 for dove, pheasant.

If your 12ga will accept 3" mag shells, they're a better bet for larger game, if you're using it for fowl, don't worry about it too much. Also, be aware of the choke on your shotgun, that will impact the shot spread.

Buckshot is much larger than birdshot. Buckshot is what one should use for home defense. 0000 (four ought) buckshot is the largest buckshot and is the same diameter as a .32 caliber bullet. Birdshot can be as small as a large pencil dot.

It's light for deer, would happen to be dove shot. It's a law enforcement variation of dove and pheasant shot.

It can take deer, and is excellect for home defense, where over penetrations is not a factor.
