Mine used to stay in his buggy - look for the carriage that takes bikes and buggies! He loves going on the train - actually needs very little to occupy him!
Books, small games (ELC have a travelling etch a sketch thing he loves) that sort of thing. Good luck.

Trains have a lot easier motion as they have a larger wheel and carrage base, so reading is not really a problem for most people. Other things to keep you occupied are portable music equipment (as long as it is turned right down and personal to you and not the person sitting next to you), puzzle book, stitching or knitting, laptop (most long distance trains are now fitted with a wireless ring for buisness passengers) portable dvd player, etc, etc. You will be surprised how fast the trip goes, it always seems quicker when on the train. I just like to look out of the window and watch the world go past when on a fresh journey. Good Luck

I took my daughter to London from just north of Newcastle when she was about 18 months old. I was dreading it until I found a clear plastic bag one of her large toys had come in and it dawned on me how perfect it would be to carry small toys. I filled it with some of her favorite rattles and other noisy toys, a couple of small soft toys, a book or two, a brand new toy for something completely different, and a tube of Smarties. She alternated looking out the window at animals and trees and cars, and rummaging through her Busy Bag. And the Smarties were both an activity and a treat. We learned a bit about counting and colours and grouping while we ate them together. You could probably do the same thing with a handful of gummy bears or wine gums, if your toddlers don't do chocolate.
Also, you might try watching Thomas the Tank Engine and Underground Ernie with them to help them get excited about the trip.

Keep them entertained with lots of eye spy games and maybe even print them a sheet of pictures of animals or objects they could look out for. When they see them they can tick it on their list.
