Go for the punching bag-it will be more beneficial in developing your techniques, combinations and power and speed to a lesser extent. There are many drills and other things you can do to develop your speed and reactions without buying costly equipment. One is to hang a tennis ball from the ceiling and as it moves around try hitting it with your hands. Another is to bounce the tennis ball and try to kick it after it bounces with your kick or a hand shot before it bounces twice. You can also have someone hold it head level in front of you and then drop it and see if you can fire a punch or kick and hit it before it hits the floor. Tennis balls are cheaper and their is a wealth of this type of stuff on the Internet if you just search it out but the heavy bag and what it can do for you will not be so easily replaced or substituted for.

Absolutely a punching bag is the best way to go. I have had both and not only is the punching bag the most realistic, you can practice more moves and better simulate real-life situations with it. You can get them with a gravity stand if you don't want to or can't hang it. I would recommend a sand bag as opposed to a bag filled with water, because from personal experience, they feel most like a body when you hit it which could better prepare you if ever you need to protect yourself.

Get someone to make you a punching bag and stuff it your self. It's cheaper.
If you're afraid that sand will hurt your fist, stuff it with used cloth. But you'll need a lot of that. Having sand is also difficult to maintain if your bag is being placed indoor. When the bag breaks, you'll find yourself in a mess. And you'll need at least 2 wall plugs to hang it and 4 if your punches and kick are powerful.
My dad used to stuff his bag with red bean, green beans and soya beans. They are much lighter. He stir fry them so that they will not grow in the bag.
I used to make my own speed bag. I stuffed a volley ball with lots of cloth and had a bicycle tyre tubing go thru it. I secure both end using brackets and wall plugs and they work fine.

floor to ceiling ball will help immensly with weaving and dodging. when you hit back, the different angles coming back at you are more natural than a heavy bag swnging back and forth at a much slower pace.
