My scalp produces a normal amount of oil near the front of my head, towards my face, so my hair is better-moisturized and looks and feels better. The rest of my head doesn't seem to have as much oil and my hair is pretty dry and doesn't look or feel very good. Is there any way to moisturize my hair and scalp and get it to produce more oil so my hair is healthier? Or is there any product I can use with a similar effect?

I had long hair for over 40 years, so have lots of experience.
1] use a moisturizing shampoo on entire scalp. Do not scrub shampoo into hair shaft. Scrub scalp with fingertips and let suds rinse thru hair shafts.
2] rinse very thoroughly, about twice as long as you think you should.
3] Squeeze out some of the moisture with hands/fingers, and apply moisturizing conditioner to middle and back or scalp [ not front ] and hair shafts, gently. Shave legs or something while it soaks in for a minute.
4] again, rinse twice as much as you think you should.
5] press out some water from hair with hands. Wrap hair in a towel. Do NOT rub hair dry.
6] scrub combs and brush with shampoo and nail brush or old toothbrush, and rinse well.
7] COMB out tangles with a wide tooth comb. [ Never rub or brush wet hair - it is very fragile when wet, and will break and split. ]
8] avoid any heat tools if possible.
9] check all styling products to be sure they do not contain alcohol - very drying [ gels, sprays, etc. ]
10] use a good [ Pantene, Neutrogena, etc, ] deep conditioner twice a week, until hair is in better shape; then once a week or so.
11] drink 1/2 gallon of water a day [ also good for complexion ]
12] avoid all fried, fast, and junk food - even diet junk food
13] take a good quality mutivitamin with minerals every day
PS: I rarely brush or blow dry my hair, and it is in great shape!

As the oil glands are in the scalp, when you brush, let the bristles GENTLY make contact with the scalp & roots of the hair. This stimulation, repeated, will train your oil glands to release more oil. Let the stroke of your brush be long, repeatedly drawing the oils further and further down the hair shaft, to the dry ends (or you'll have oil at the base, and still have dry ends). Soon you'll see the benefits.

massage your scalp every night in the shower which will stimulate the glands to produce more oil.

you could also help your hair along by using hair and scalp treatment that you can purchase from beauty supply stores. Any brand will do, but the ones with aloe vera are best. they moisturize and protect the hair and scalp.

good luck!

Massage your scalp daily with your fingertips
it brings the natural oils from your scalp all the way down to the ends of you hair

or you could use some deep conditioning product
depends really if you are black/white/chinese/mixed etc

Scalp massages and brushing your hair will stimulate oil glands near the hair follicle.

Use lots of a moisturizing conditioner, and massage it like crazy when you are in the shower. Use a good hairbrush and massage it lots that way when your hair is dry.
