It's named after the Earl of Sandwich. I don't know the year but he was in a "hot" card game at the time. The world has never been the same since!!!!

It was named after the Earl of Sandwich. Because, he never wanted to stop playing poker long enough to eat. His servants came up with the sandwich, Placing meat in between two pieces of bread. I do not know what year.

Its said that sandwiches were "discovered" as early as Henry the 5ths' time, when he would put slabs of meat on bread as opposed to using utensils. However, if you go to Whats Cooking America.net/history of sandwiches you'll discover that the "sandwich" started during the 1st Century BC.
