Toyota Corolla, Toyota Yaris, Honda Civic, Honda Fit, Mazda3. All are safe and have proven reliable. Avoid Nissan at all cost. They are no longer reliable. Avoid the domestic pieces of junk and Hyundai and Volkswagen.

I'd recommend a used Honda Civic... But it really depends on how much you want to spend. Some people thing $2,000 is a lot, others think $20,000 is reasonable.

If you want dependable, buy Honda or Toyota. You may pay a little more, but in the long run will be cheaper.

Honda Civic, 2 door, but may cost too much.
Toyota Corolla would be great.
Ford Escort would be Inexpensive.
Pontiac Sunfire's are inexpensive and fairly sporty.

Probably a Volkswagon or something imported. I wouldn't buy american cars because they are expensive and arent very reliable.
