She gave me a bible.

I really did not know what to make of it.

What would you have done?

I think the thought was there and been as she's a practising Christian it was like her wanting to share part of what she holds dearest to her with you which is really sweet even if you don't believe yourself. Some people take religion so serious that it sort of becomes cherished to them like a family member, for example like giving photos of your kids to family members to share those memories and part of your life. If my sister turned to religion and gave me a Bible I would accept it graciously and I'm not particulary religious either but I would accept it anyway.

Another way you could look at it is that she may be trying to force her religion on you but thats a very negative perspective and I'd look more on the positive side if that was me.

Well I have often got presents that were unsuitable but I could never say "I don't want it" to offend the person. So I always said "Thank you for your gift" but then I always donated it to someone you would make use out of the gift. By doing that the gift is not wasted and you are helping someone out. That's the way I look at it anyway.

The Bible is the most precious gift that can be given.

Sadly, oh so very sadly, none of us think so unless or until our eyes are opened.

No doubt you sister would love to give you eternal life and all the blessings of God, but she cannot. No one can. Only God can.

So she gave what is the next best thing.

There was a time when I might have thought as you do, but now I know it to be the most precious thing in the world.

Treasure it even if you don't understand, and best of all, seek God through it.

Give her a copy of the Lotus sutra or a book about paganism this Christmas.

Say thank you and read it. You don't have to believe in her religion that the book inspires, but you can read the book that has inspired world history for thousands of years. Who knows, you might even come to see the hand of God in all of it. In any case, it's a book, and it is loved by your sister. If you love her, be appreciative. She could have given you a pitchfork.

Why not sign into a hotel as Miss Gideon and leave it in the room. I hear that is quite popular.

Accept the gift - your sister meant well. And you don't have to be a Christian to read and enjoy the Bible. Who knows? You might even learn something interesting (try starting in the book of John in the New Testament)
