They're not tacky at all. We used all silk flowers for the decorations and bouquets. (real roses on a pedestal for a 'grandparent(s) 'memorial)...My flowers turned out absolutely beautiful and I still have my bouquet (it's in my hutch). I couldn't bare having a beautiful bouquet cost hundreds of dollars that would die 5 days later. Seemed a waste of money to me. We used hydrangeas, roses, chrysanthemums, greenery. Also made silk flower centerpieces and had pillar candles in the middle.

The church I used to go to used real ones. Every week someone would put the flowers in the church in memory of someone or in honor of someone.
The one I go to now uses potted plants.

No church, no flowers, but I would think anyone who believed in a god would find that god worthy of something more than fake flowers.
