If I didn't add a 1 for long distance, or if I added the area code and I'm not supposed to, don't you think the phone company should connect my call anyway as long as I enter in all 10 numbers?

What I think and what you think are not the critical factors.

The critical factors are based upon the system design. It is designed to perform a certain way. Expecting it to do otherwise can be a very tall order.

Let's say you are in your car. You think you put it in Drive, but in fact you put it in Reverse. You meant to and want to go forward. Will you go forward, after all that is what you meant to do?

The phone circuits are pretty sophisticated but they do not read your mind.

1 must be dialed to access the long distance circuits, with most cellular and some VoIP providers the 1 will be added if you did not dial it...

many locations where there are areacode overlays it has become required by law to dial the full number including the areacode, dialing within the same area code requires 10 digit dialing, but it is not required to dial the 1 first..

this is not a flaw in the system, it is actually a good practice for them to require the 1 before dialing, this reduces the chances for a long-distance wrong number, which can be costly
