The people that call Jews a species are racists. They are calling them that because they do not believe that Jews are human, that they are lower than humans. Its a form of an insult.

Race:
–noun
1. a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.
2. a population so related.

Agree with Punch. They've been referred to as a race, as opposed to a religious group, which has some truth to it; there are agnostic Jews, and atheist Jews, for example. Species is a term used to define different kinds of animals, although that's not as cut and dried as I thought. http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/species/. Anyway, I'm over 50 and never heard Jews referred to as species, so I'm gonna guess you meant 'race' or the person you heard say that was mistaken.

Because they're ignorant or racist - or both.

Humans are a species. Jews, like Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, and Zoroastrians, are humans.

I have heard them referred to as a race, but never a "species".

We are of the human species like everyone.

What kind of a stupid question is that?

Such things are obviously crass and xenophobic, but I have to say that the various groups who make a point of keeping themselves isolated -in whatever way - have only themselves to blame if the mass of people treat them as 'other'.

It's a Nazi thing: Hitler said in Mein Kampf "The Jews are undoubtedly a race, but they are not human."

Nazi propaganda portrayed Jews as being descendants of rodents rather than ape-like creatures.

Never heard this before. I think it could have been said by a certain group of people who ran Germany a while back.

What people do that? I've never heard it. But I tend to avoid bigots, racists, and the terminally stupid.
