It calms me, my friend. It always has. It awakens in me a feeling of wonder, fills me with a sense of deep beauty, and it speaks to my soul.
Spiritual music doesn't have to mean Gospel, although I do love the old hymns, and especially Christmas carols. I listen to them year round, in fact.
I love thundering classical music, played so loud that it rattles my windows and obliterates every other sound around me. Enjoyed in this way, I am at one with it's harmonious melodies.
My true love is opera, and nothing moves me to tears faster than a beautiful aria, sung from the heart. Here are two of my favorites. I hope you enjoy them.

Two high points?
The day before Christmas, alone in Canterbury Cathedral, my husband and I had wandered in out of the snow and suddenly the boys choir began singing Handel - "For unto us a child is born." The sound was breathtaking, the experience transforming. If only EVERY child were treated with such deference!
then years later -
Listening to Gregorian Chant, Christmas, the Duomo (Santa Maria del Fiori) in Florence. Angelic and otherworldly cannot do justice to the experience. How everyone didn't float out of their bodies and disappear?? I have no idea. It was stunning.
(Despite being musicians, we finally grasped that chant had been written specific to the acoustical reverberation of each Cathedral and could only be fully appreciated in that context.)

a very wonderful person shared some of his spiritual music with me once ...
it meant a great deal to him and in listening to it ... I could feel his emotion and understand why it meant so much
that is what spiritual music is about.... it is about feeling the emotion of not only the artist , but understanding the impact is has on every listener
and energy flows through that music
the energy of every single ear
through music there is a connection to the world
do you remember that day abdul ?

Made me very happy. I'm a sucker for Renaissance and Baroque music and listen mainly to that, and prefer performing that over any other area. In both cases I prefer sacred over secular music (it's less dramatic and more "settled" than opera, I think).
