Well, you could dog sit for a friend and see how it goes. That would give you an idea.

Another thing you could do is volunteer at a rescue organization or humane office... they need walkers and others to exercise dogs, to help groom and feed them... to give them attention and socialize them... If you can handle working with rescue dogs, you should be ready for a dog.

If you think you're ready, you have to read up on breed traits of breeds that interest you. A lot of dogs end up in rescue because they were purchased by someone who didn't know the breed traits and then couldn't tolerate the traits of the breed, so they abused them or ignored them, or dumped them.

Also, you need to make sure you can afford the dog... food, toys, medicines, flea/tick treatments, etc.

You also need to make sure you know how to be Alpha Pack Leader, since dogs are pack animals and not happy unless they know their place in the pack.

You need to be disciplined a dog is not a toy. You have to build your life around them. They need to be fed, bathed walked, played with, trained, they poop you clean it up they pee you clean it up. They chew, they bark, they need shots and you get vet bills. You can't always take them on trips so you have to board them. Think it over are you ready for the responsibility? Or will you get tired of it real fast.

No. Dogs are so wonderful. Just too hard to take care of. I've had dogs before. Ended up with $1000.00 vet bills. Ate up my phone. poop all over. It's just really hard. I will never have a dog again. I love them soo much too. Just too much!!
