Because we are all human. The more people think they are above sin because of their strong beliefs then they get more temptation thrown at them.

Two reasons:

1) Though a true Christian strives to overcome sin, he will have sin always (until the resurrection):
1 John 1:8 -- If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

2) And because most of those who profess God, do not do what he says:
Luke 6:46 -- And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Matthew 7:21 -- Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Sin, like Satan, is everywhere, even in a nunnery. Some places are 'safer' than others, like church. but no one or place is immune except Heaven and an honest heart. When a person is 'saved' they step out of the Baptismal font back into the same sinful world, but they have on a pair of spiritual 'hip-waders', if you will. The new testament, book of Romans, comes to mind. Enjoy.

People were given free will and it is human nature to do many things that are considered sinful. Think about it, even the most devout Christian gets Jelous when someone hits on their wives. No only that, but when you have an area that is full of people who believe in sin, there is bound to be more sin going on.

Most are still trying to recover from the Yankee invasion of a few years back. When the Yankees took over they promised a lot of folks 40 acres and a mule. When they didn't live up to the promise, many of 'em just decided to take things as they go about living.

I'll answer that by saying: Why do birds suddenly appear ? Why do people sin? Why does Johnny steal Mary's candy? Why do dogs bark? Why do people ask your kind of questions? Why is grass green? Why is chocolate tasty? Why do they sin more in Egypt? Why do they eat more Mexican food in California? Why do people read books? Why do toilets work? Why do cows graze? Why do politicians kiss babies? Why do fish swim? Why are eggs eaten fried? Why does dynamite explode? Why does . . . .

The same reason the red necks, smoke tobacco like feins, support the troops by sending them into need-less wars because they heard it was good to do so on fox news, poach animals illegally, hold dog fights supported by the local sheriff, attend church and burn crosses in blacks yards later on that day, and generally hate anyone who isnt just like them....

The answer... they are Ignorant
