..because he said, "Jesus Christ!" when he was frustrated at something. She said he was swearing. I'm not sure about that one, can you really consider "Jesus Christ!" a swear, in a public school? I mean, I don't think I'd get in trouble if I yelled "Thor!" when I stubb my toe, or something I'm a senior, by the way. Thoughts? Wait, for people who can't read, let me repeat a few key points here...
PUBLIC SCHOOL.
DETENTION.
TEACHER.
JESUS = SWEARING.
Kay, we clear? Now if anyone replies with something like "well was it a public school, or a private school?", you will get the DUNCE cap!.

Unfortunately "Jesus Christ" has been t5hought of a s a "swear word" for as long as I can recall, (and that's getting to be a pretty long time.) This means that there is an established president and it also means that your friend hasn't got a leg to stand on.

Suggest to him that next time he has the urge to speak up, saying "Thor" might be a good substitute to try.

No, I wouldn't consider saying "Jesus Christ" a swear... only the Religious use that slant when someone says "Jesus Christ" at a time like that (My aunt used to tell us this ALL the time when my sister and I were young). She wouldn't have thought twice if he had yelled "Thor"... she probably would have made fun of it. Seems some of these teachers in the public schools are taking it just a tad too far. If they can't learn restraint on such things, they really shouldn't be teaching.

Yes, it is swearing. Swearing is not allowed in a public school.
Was he yelling at the teacher? If so, then he deserves detention for being disrespectful and shouting at her, whether he yelled, "Jesus Christ" or not. The tone a person takes means a lot.
Are you telling the entire story? What was he frustrated at? Did he say anything else? What had HE done?
You need to tell all and not just part of it.
Are YOU clear?
It is disrespectful to scream at or talk back to a teacher because you are frustrated.

I really think it depends on the situation. If he dropped some books and said Jesus Christ, nothing should happen. If the teacher told him to be quiet or something and then he said it, that implies cursing at his teacher and total disrespect. In both cases you could substitute words you consider to be swear words, but you shouldn't try to guess his intent. So depending on the situation, maybe detention was called for.
God Bless.

He was using the name Jesus Christ in vain therefore it is considered swearing. He was not using the name Jesus Christ in respect. Swearing usually gets detention.
Thor is not a common word associated with anger or with swearing. A word that is becoming know as a swear word but was not formally known as a "swear" word is the word freakin. I am sure if Thor was a word commonly used as a word used when someone was angry or was mad it would become know as a swear word.

It does not matter what type of school it was. Swearing is pretty much a subjective thing. What a swear is to you may not be a swear to me, vice versa. You have to understand that in this life, the truth is what someone sees as truth. Everything is a matter of perception. If that teacher thinks it is swearing then it is. One other thing that is good to know, those in authority wield the power and enforce the rules. He needs to look at this as a life lesson and learn from it.

it doesnt really make much sense since it was a public school. if it was a christian school , then it would be cosidered as swearing because your using his name in vain. and for some reason, thats considered swearing. but it shouldnt count in public school because its comprised of kids of different religions so i guess it wouldnt really apply.
besides, i do it all the time. JESUS CHRISt! lolz!

Jesus Christ! What is wrong with people? Everyone wants Jesus in school, then they punish you for saying Jesus in school. Saying "Jesus Christ" is not swearing, or the Bible is full of swearing. It is using the lord's name in vain, but it is not swearing. Your teacher is a dork, and needs to be reported by that kids parents.

It's an interesting question.
I think because it's been considered to be 'profane' for so long that even if someone isn't religious, to hear it is a bit shocking.
I was raised Catholic, went through a Born Again phase, however I no longer ascribe to either of their beliefs, and still if I say "goddammit" or "jesus christ!" it catches me off guard because it was so 'taboo' for so long.
I think it's the least of our worries though as far as Christianity being forced on school kids. The pledge of allegiance alone is forced theism.

Although it was inappropriate to say what your friend did in a public setting, I would contest the detention, or refuse to attend on the grounds that the teacher's opinion of what constitutes "swearing" violates his freedom of expression. A simple apology to those around him for assaulting their delicate, virgin ears may be in line though.
His, and your parents pay the teacher's salary. And at least he didn't say f*ck!
(LMAO at the "Thor" example. Clever!)
