The city isn't building a church. The church is building one. They are petitioning the city to get the permit to do so. If you disagree with it, then you may want to go around your neighborhood and get them to sign a petition. Go to the public hearing and voice your concerns and present the petition to the board.
Just to let you know, it doesn't matter if it's a residential zone. Churches are built around houses all the time.

A church is actually a great neighbor. It certainly beats many other alternatives including, a large subdivision of noisy neighbors or several homes with dogs that bark incessantly, or have teenagers who blare music and drag race down residential streets. Churches are often busy places on Sundays but not other days of the week. Perhaps there is some negotiating with having them plant the same number of trees they removed from the property...or perhaps there could be a landscaping barrier. When our church was expanded, one of the concessions we made was to enhance the property with landscaping especially on the border of the church property and the residential subdivision. It looks wonderful and the people in that community are very happy. One man even had a fence built in the project. Everything is negotiable, and hopefully, if you are dealing with an understanding congregation, they will be more ameniable to your concerns.

You will probably lose the trees to something whether it is a church or something else that will be built on the property.. You certainly can't stop them from building something there just because you like the trees as they belong to someone else and they could put homes or a store there. Either way, unless you just don't like churches I think they will build something.
A church is usually pretty quiet, but you could get them to put up a high block wall to completely block out any noise..
You don't live in Sequim Washington by chance? I know a guy there that is working to stop a church from building.

I think your arguments are very valid. Try the petition thing and use your logic to convince people to sign it. There might be neighbors who would balk at signing a petition against a church because "it's not the Christian thing to do". However, as long as you stay logical you will hopefully win the day. I think some of those mega churches are especially heinous. It's like a supermall of jesus or something.

It is a zoning problem so if it is private property residential now and the county/city zone must be changed .. like I said Lawyer time.
God forbid it is a muslim group and you have to listen to the (?) call to prayer 5 times a day.

The city does not want to build a church. Some denomination wants to build a church, and must get zoning approval from the city.
If you object to having a church behind your house, go to the hearing and be heard.

Get any neighbors you have to sign a petition against the building of a church in that area. Go to all the meetings and make yourself heard. Most people might be scared to be against a church, but it is your neighborhood. It can get very loud in church. It may also affect the property value. You must make sure that your side is heard.

I'd try to put a petition together and get people to sign it, and then submit it to the local government. That would probably do more than just talking to them about it.
