A lot of the answers say "because they believe the Bible is the word of God." But this does not answer the question.
What is really being asked, is why do Bible-fundamentalists believe that their personal interpretation of the Bible is basis of all truth? Why do they never consider their own infallibility in their interpretations? Why do they think they have a harness on the Holy Spirit and only they have been given the truth?
Yet 2000 years of great men, great theologians, people who dedicated their entire lives to God are tossed away as if they knew nothing in comparison to John Biblethumper's interpretation.

I equate bible-fundamentalist with religious fanatics - both are sickening. I don't equate either with a bible-believer. Both my family and my in-laws are religious fanatics from 2 different religions and my husband and I don't associate with either anymore. Both groups refuse to talk about the Bible - just show up to the Sunday-morning gatherings (church or otherwise) and you're saved. Bull-oney!! It takes more than that. I believe that they are very arrogant -we'd see you in heaven but sorry you won't be there - and very insecure. They deny both, though. Very sad.

Probably most religions teach that theirs is the correct line of thinking, it's just that "Bible-fundamentalists" are so in-your-face about it.
They are unwilling to let any facts get in the way of their teachings - to the extent that they can make up explainations for any question you put to their faith or teachings - and it just makes them look like a bunch of moo-cows following their cud-chewing leaders.
They're a sad lot.

Because the reality is that the truth is no where to be found no matter how hard you try. Therefore they just conclude that their truth is the basis of all truths.

Because large sums of money are funneled into their movement by the global economic elite to ensure that their dark ages mentality is given a primary spot in shaping American laws, in order to destroy whatever semblance of rational, intellectual thought ever did exist in public discourse.
The global elite need steely-eyed and zealous holy warriors so that they can continually orchestrate global wars to justify looting the public treasury and ignoring the real environmental and humanitarian crisises gripping the planet.

Because their book says so.
They've been told since they were children that their book is the Word of their god. Therefore their book is right and everyone and everything else is wrong.
Even objective reality.
