Make sure your onions are cold... place them in the refrigerator before chopping.
Make sure your knives are sharp so the onions are cut quickly without mashing.
Cut at arms length. Don't stoop over to look at the onions. This sort of implies that you have good knife skills.
Improve your knife skills. Peeling and finely chopping an onion can be done in 60 to 90 seconds. Coarse chop 30 to 45 seconds. Not enough time to cry.
If all else fails, use a food processor. :-) lol

The smell is what cause the crying. Simply use any method that will block the smell from the nose, including using a clipper on the nose to block the smell.
Otherwise, you can always just chop the onion in a blender.

Hello:
Peel the onion skin under COOL running water, and it will help to prevent you from crying when you are peeling the onion and when you have to cut the onion too! ;-)

Use a very sharp knife, and slice, don't chop, or just push your knife down through them.
You could put them in the fridge for an hour.
Under running cold water will take some of the sharpness away, and it is an ideal way to tone them down if you wish to use them uncooked in a salad.
