so is this a case of simple "identity theft"? And because this is becoming more and more of a problem in the world, could this be the underlying spiritual cause?

Some people call themselves Christian who aren't. We're not to judge one another, yet good judgement is needed, on a case-by-case basis, to discern the 'realies' from the 'phonies'. Certainly not on a blanket fashion. All Christians are good, but not all people who call themselves Christian are. I know some Catholics that I will see in Heaven, (I'm Protestant), but I would not switch faiths. No matter what manner you choose to honor God, do so in spirit and truth and you shall be glorified. Amen.

Fortunately it's up to Christ to decide who are his followers and who are not. The title deeds belong to him.

Millions of people, both Protestant and Catholic, call themselves 'Christian' yet without realising that only those whom God chooses are entitled to that name. This is explained in 1 Corinthians 1: 'Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not mamy were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things to nullify the things that are, so that no-one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus.' Also, in Ephesians chap 1: 'He predestined us to be adopted as his children through Jesus Christ... And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.'

'The Lord knows those who are his' and 'Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.' - 2 Tim 2:19 Jesus said weeds would grow in amongst the wheat until the harvest, when he will send his angels to gather the weeds out and burn them. Those who know the fellowship of Christ in the Holy Spirit have no fear of that happening to them. This problem will be remedied, once and for all, by God, in his due time.

It is a minority of Protestants who take the name "Christian" then claim that Catholics (Roman or otherwise) are not Christian. This same minority also make other claims about Catholics that are not true - claims that are quite visible in Yahoo Answers.

Catholics are the original Christians - end of story.

Many protestants try to take the name "catholic" too, they prefer to call the Catholic Church by the name "Roman Catholic" church. It is all part of a desire to be the only "true Christians" ... goes back a few hundred years to about 1521 AD

Pity that, generally speaking, conservative evangelicals and fundamentalist Christians do not know much Church history.

The total number of Christians in the world is: 2.1 billion. This is how it breaks down:

1) Catholics: 1.4 billion
2) Eastern Orthodox: 0.3 billion
3) Protestansts (Baptists, Lutherans, etc. etc): 0.4 billion

In light of these statistics, how can a group that represents less than 25% percent of Christians say what Christians believe?

Boy ! I sure am relieved . I was thinking about atomic bombs, poison gas , and disease warfare as world problems , now I learn that saying Catholics are not Christians is what we have to fear .

Just because I don't agree with Roman Catholics traditions does not mean I think the parishioners are not Christian.
That's for God to judge.

i'm Southern Baptist, yet locate plenty (and that i advise plenty) that I consider in Catholic coaching. the only issues that i do no longer understand completely is the will to consider the Catholic church homes teachings concerning Mary as Mediatrix, praying to Saints, and a few different concerns that i'm investigating heavily. i do no longer evaluate myself a Protestant, yet a Christian, saved via a similar Lord Jesus Christ as my Catholic brethren.

Those first called Christian at Antioch were the likes of:
- awful lawful Saul of Saul-->Paul-->Converted Paul
- carried away (by dissumulation) Barnabas
- Peter of Simon-->Peter, called Satan, and told
when thou art converted, then strengthen thy brethren.

Can we move on, from carnal childish things: laws,
to the grace and truth which came by Jesus Christ.

A) Do NOT generalize so generously. You are talking about a very small percentage of all protestants.

B) As for those pitiable persons, pray for them and ignore their venom. It usually stems from equal parts ignorance and envy.
