No, that is not true. Where did you hear that exactly?

You may have heard that backward's compatibility with PS2 games on your PS3 is in question, and may be removed from future systems, but as of right now, your system will play everything you put in it, and it always will. The PS3's proprietary format is "Blu-ray", and it is the main format for all PS3 video games.

You have nothing to worry about.

The only issue you might run into would be with HDMI DRM features which currently aren't used on any media, but will be eventually.
