No excuse for this one I'm afraid. You forgot a gift: how about stopping to buy something on the way, you knew you were going to a birthday party. Some friend you are!!!

Something like that happened to me once, only I didn't have enough money to buy a gift. I came clean and told her I couldn't afford a gift at that time, but I wouldn't forget. She was cool and said my company was all the gift she needed. She wasn't a girlfriend, just a buddy. If you forgot, just say that. I'm sure the person will understand if they're cool.

Just wish the person happy birthday and don't mention that you forgot a gift. If you want to, just get a gift and give it later with no explanation other than, belated gift. If you don't choose to get a belated gift, you are not obligated to do so.

How did you forgot when you were headed to a bday party? = ) That's kinda funny. Anyway, I would just do a belated gift, just laugh about it. It's not that big of a deal.

Tell your friend that you had trouble deciding what to give and you thought that spending the day with your friend doing something of their choice with you picking up the tab would be a good gift.

Talk to the host and explain quietly how you forgot, and then offer to get something later.
