You wont know till you turn it on, but hopefully not.
It's even less likely if it wasn't on and their was no disc inside (the hard drive and disc bay, having moving parts, would be most at risk.)

It's a tank of a system. If it fell on a carpeted floor, internal damage will probably not have occurred. I agree with the other answerer, with a disc in the PS3, you are more at risk, if you were to drop the system, but if the system seems like it is working fine, then you are in luck.

Its a really solid system the only damage that could of been done is to the laser make sure it reads all the games.

From what I seen, of all the game systems, not the sturdiest of them all. It appears that your lucky in this case. From your description, you suffered only cosmetic damage.

very sturdy. my friend knocked over my ps3 by accident when it was standing up, nothing happened to it.
