After spending over 20 years in the U.S. Navy, I had picked up Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Tagalog, French (added to my high school 1/2 year of French) (I was thought to be Italian when I used my bad French in Tunisia because I spoke it with an Italian accent! ha ha), Arabic, Russian (Ukrainian dialect) Italian, and Swahili. Before I went in, I also spoke passable Spanish (from running with some Puerto Rican kids and high school Spanish taught by a Castillan Spaniard, a Cuban, a Puerto Rican and a Mexican). All the languages I picked up, I was able to find directions, shop, eat and carry on a decent conversation. However, over the years of not using them (I retired in '85), I've forgotten a lot. I was in Sicily a few years ago, and my Italian came back quickly, even though their dialect was a bit different from the Sardinian I spoke for 3 1/2 years). I actually learned Cantonese and Turkish since I retired from working with foreign navies and working with the Turkish and Taiwan navies.
I spoke Finn as a child but my parents wouldn't speak it around me, only my grandmother. I remember some phrases.

I can speak one language - the one I learnt in my family -

I was taught many other languages but bragging is not my thing - I can infiltrate in several countries without an ounce of problem

And so many people who say that they speak 100 languages I'd like to test them in real situtations and/or through tests - I think the slaughter would be horrible - Amen

I speak English and Portuguese. I can get by in Spanish and Italian and a bit of French.

I believe being able to speak more than one language is a great benefit. Not only in the ability to better communicate, but I think it also broadens your mind to other cultures and communities.
