I have to run a mile every Friday at my school. I got 8:20 yesterday and 7:19 last Friday. I want to get 6:30 at the very most. If anyone could post some tips on breathing, running around the corners, running in general, etc., that would really help.

Thanks for posting!

Pace yourelf take the first fourth very slow then pick it up. You should be running fastest in the final minute.

You ran 7:19, that's great for a beginner. Honestly, 6:30 is a real stretch for only running on Friday's. That time will get you a spot on the track distance team. My advise is this: try to run a consistent pace. In the end, if you have anything left, really pick it up for the last 200meters or so. If you could run like a crazy person, that means you could have kept a faster pace in the first part of the race. You really don't want to be able to run super fast in the end. You want most of your work to be done in the first 1400 meters of the race.

The more you run, the more you'll understand this.

If you are allowed, run with your ipod or MP3 player...also when your running don't let any negative thoughts reach your mind, if you say your doing bad then you are going to do bad, but if you give it your all and keep yourself motivated, heck you could end up with a 6 minute mile. Running is 90% mental and 10% physical in most surcumstances so don't freak yourself out or ever give up. A handy tip is on the first lap go at pace, 2nd lap get a little bit faster, 3rd lap all you think about is how tired you are so when you get to that point just remember all the things I said. And on the 4th lap give it your 100%!!! Its all you and I know you can do it! THink of how proud you will be when you finish and while you rrunnin gjust tell yourself "the faster I run this, The faster I get done and the pain stops" Onc eyou finish it will feel sooo good!!! So good luck and I am eager to know what your time will end up on! Don't give up!!!! =D

1. Wear a watch while you run. If you look at your watch and see that you're close to your goal, it can definitely motivate you the last lap.

2. Pace yourself. You can kill yourself by starting out too fast. Try and learn what it feels like to run at the pace you want to run your mile at, so when it comes time to run it it won't seem so abnormal.

3. Eat right. Nothing really sugary the day of the run, plus nothing within 2 hours of it. But make sure you do have something light 2-4 hours before, depending on how long it takes to digest.

dont start off too fast, that is the worst mistake you can make. it sounds as if you run it around a soccer field, so if you want to run a 7:00 then 6:45 then 6:30 as your ultimate goal, and are running ___ laps of the field.....
Divide goal time (7.0, 6.75, 6.5) by ___ laps of field to get your splits.
Splits are the elapsed times you should see on your watch after you complete each lap.
If you get 1.25 as the result of the above formula, then run each lap in 1 minute 15 seconds and check your watch after each lap to make sure you are still on pace.

last year i ran a mile and got 9:00, which was not very good for me. then this year, i ran with one of my friends who is really fast and i got 7:38. that seemed to help me a lot. also make sure your breathing is normal and try not to think "i really need to speed up". also for the last 2 laps i sprinted as hard as i could.

You need a training plan. Running a mile once a week will get similar results if that's all you do.

Try this:

Mon-Wed-Fri run a mile
Tue-Thur jog half-mile warmup & warmdown. Run 10x100s fast, controlled, and with good form. Short rest between.

I know when I run I just set a goal and tell myself to run it in a certain time or I will make me run extra. It might help to breathe in through nose and out through mouth.

You probably already know this, but when I was running I would cross train swimming laps and biking. And stretch, of course, to remain injury free. Yoga perhaps?
