I know many folks that came here from Ireland (I am making an assumption based on your username). Many of these folks became US citizens, many returned to Ireland.
New York City has a huge Irish community with deep roots. The Irish were a driving force behind this City. If you plan on staying, get in touch with your brethren here, they will be there for you (jobs, places to live etc.).
Only about 40% of NYC is Native NYers. The other 60% came from somewhere else. For me that is what makes NYC so vibrant. For you, there is a community of folks here for you.

Don't worry about how much money you spend. NY doesn't charge taxes on clothing and shoes for under $110 so if you need something, just go get it!
