4 ft sounds like plenty. How heavy is it?

When I boxed, many years ago, I had a 160 pound bag, and I was about 220. But once it's hung as freeweight, it gives you a lot more resistance.

And I hadn't thought about it either, but the two guys above are right - you should take it inside between workouts or the weather will ruin it.

Century has some good floor standing heavy bags and their wave master (one of their cheaper ones is height adjustable). Also you can fill it with sand instead of water if you live in a colder climate and you can also remove the padded bag part and take it in when not using it and just leave the hard plastic base outside. Then when you get ready to work out you just take the padded bag part out and slip it on the neck and you are set. I would not do it in real cold weather though since this may make the plastic hard and brittle and it may crack instead of flexing. If you have a basement you could put it down there and that would be a better place for it.

A blossom tree will probably not be adequate since just a forty pound bag when it jumps, swings and moves around will have its momentum plus it's weight working against that tree limb.

i wouldn't train bag work outside unless you are taking the bag inside after every workout. The weather will really work on it. If its a nice day and you want to workout outside i would have a friend hold pads/focus mitts for you and do alot of technique training that way. Keep the bags in doors.

One good rain and that bag is ruined better off getting a good heavy bag stand and keep it in the garage if you got one. Personally I think a 6 ft bag would be better. you can easliy adjust the height of your kicks as need be. If you plan on kicking that is.
