Some other things to look at: 1) In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), swelling is all about kidney function. 2) So far, Mazda Mechanic has the best answer. He's right: You need to get up and move, constantly. AND sitting IS really hard on the body. Your blood pools and gets sluggish. 3) Extra weight and the heat will make this condition worse, so will a desk job, so every 2 hours, get up and move around for at least 15 minutes. Look at changing your job if you're in a desk job all day long. 4) Look at using the following herbs: dandelion, red beans, especially aduki beans which are tonifying to kidney chi in TCM (so are Kidney Beans); add some seaweed to your diet, as seaweed makes the entire system run better; horse chestnut; thyme; Butcher's broom; Rosemary. Circucaps by Sanhelios is an excellent supplement available in healthfood stores and co-ops that contains very concentrated extracts of thyme, rosemary and Butchers' Broom--it works incredibly well. If they don't have it on the shelves, they can order it for you. Insist upon it. It's less than $20 for 90 caps. Know that they've thrown out the ideas about salt and high blood pressure, and salt and swelling. What's true is that a bit of salt in the amounts needed by the body will aid in a) keeping you hydrated, b) keeping the circulatory system functioning better, c) keeping water and salts in solution, and in balance in the body. There's a reason we ALL crave salt when we are thirsty and in need of some sodium. I always advise people to listen to salt cravings in the body. NOT so with sugar cravings. Look at getting some acupuncture done, and taking Chinese herbs to fix your edema. I have found this to be the absolute healthiest, most efficacious method of healing when it comes to kidney chi issues. And just so you know: Bladder, Adrenal and Sexual Organs, including the prostate, are ALL on the same meridian, so if you're experiencing swelling, it could be any of those organs (or all) that's out of balance. As this is a staganation issue almost always: GET UP AND MOVE!!!! I know, I know, you'll be on YA less, but it will be better for your body. Go chase some fast young women...it's good for the blood!!! Get out of your head, and out on the dancefloor.

Your doing pretty much all you can do. Don't let him run around (keep him in a stall) and for a few days just keep doing what your doing (even after swelling has gone down). Hand walk him when it looks better so he doesn't get to stall sour. And in a day or two if swelling went down he should be good in a paddock. Just don't rush things- make sure everythings okay before youo make it worse.

Swollen feet or pedal edema can be due to prolonged standing or sitting. Try lying down with your feet raised higher than your body. If it recurs, go see your doctor. Meanwhile, go on a low salt diet, no junk or cola drinks.

In addition to the other responses, you need more exercise. Walking and running makes your legs act like pumps. Too much sitting is very hard on the body.
