Perhaps one of those black back protectors that employees of hardware stores and stone yards are required to wear. Here in Michigan, we have a several medical supply houses/stores (such as Binson's Pharmacy and Home Health Aids). I'm sure that you could find something at such a store. Check your local Yellow Pages. If a doctor orders it, most likely your friend's health insurance might pay for all or part of it.

I have Scoliosis and can't sit for long periods without proper support either so i can sympathies. There are back support pillows that are inflatable they are thinner at the top and wider with a curve in the wider end to cradle the cervical spine. Honestly I have found the best ones at Adult Shops - but they are available at some medical supply. I have tried the bolster pillows and triangle pillows even the "arch" a stiff curved plastic covered in foam that was like someones knee in my back. The main benefit of the inflatable is she can adjust the pressure where she feels it fits best. Good Luck!

I'm no expert, but a medium pillow on the back could help, or maybe a seat massager with lumbar support will do, you can get it at wal mart or office depot.
