US Coast Guard does in fact deploy to perform harbor security and hostile boarding actions in the theatre of operations.
USCG DC3 Nathan Bruckenthal was KIA in 2004.
But to answer the intent of the message, of course there are jobs which are less combat intensive. But why join the Marines or any service if you are afraid to fight and destroy the enemy? Sign up for the skill which interests you the most and that you feel you can contribute the best effort towards.

Computers are a great thing to go into especially in the Marines but a Marine is an infantryman first. If they're short, yep you'll be out there in the thick of it. But in computers, you're looking pretty good.

For one, there is no draft. So your friend didn't get drafted. 2nd if your friend does nothing but work with computers his chances of going on a combat patrol are slim. But every Marine is a rifle man first so he can still go on a patrol in Iraq.

I was in electronics. Most of my work was in the repair of encoders and decoders so in a combat zone, I'd be in the rear if anyplace. I was up for fighting with other Marines but someone needs to fix those things.

In case you didn't know it,marines were originally the troops who were stationed on a ship and were used to fight off attackers who tried to board the ship. Also, they were used to gather intelligence and escort navy personell whenever the ship had to gather fresh water or hunt for food in an unkown island or territory.
Marines are trained killers and fighters. Even if you worked in an administrative,or medical area, you also stand a chance of having someone go nuts and pull a weapon on you too.

Every Marine is a rifleman...period. You can be shipped to a battle zone if needed no matter what job you have.
Join the Coast Guard...the Marines aren't for cowards or slackers. In the CG you won't have to worry about combat.

EVERY single job has some inherent danger in it. even a computer operator can get hit by a stray bomb being dropped on them.
EVERY single Marine has some combat training.

No, every marine is an infantryman first, above anything else. This is why even pencil pushing office clerks have to qualify at least "marksman" with individual weapons.
