Bigger Hard drive... the unit are the same..
so interm the bigger the HD the more stuff you could store in there....
other then that it is the same.
you could buy the cheaper one 40GB and buy a 250GB hard drive and swap the hard drive......

The newly announced 40GB model has no PS2 backwards compatibility (at all, but it does have PS1).
It also has only 2 USB ports at the front (instead of 4, which isn't really a hardship)
The other difference is that there is no memory card slots on it (which i don't think is a big loss either.)
If you're in the UK the 60GB model is coming down at the same time to £349 with two games (don't know which two though)
So, depending on the games bundled, this might still be a better offer.
edit: Both 40GB and 60GB have Wifi

The 60GB version also has better backward compatibility in the States. The European and 40GB versions use an emulator while the US 60GB PS3 has a built in PS2 chip. It also might not have the card readers.
BTW - the 60 GB has card readers but guess which card it won't read... A Playstation memory card. You have to buy that separately, use it once or twice then never use it again. That is really annoying.

The 60 and 80GB models were identical except for PS2 compatibility. The 60GB model had all of the chips inside of the PS2, whereas the 80gb only has 1. There's no overheating problem in either model. Sony stopped selling the 60gb because it cost more.

I think the only difference is the 20 gb difference, and I think the 40 gb probably doesn't have the cell processor so that's why it's cheaper. The 40 gb is probably going to use software emulation to play PSX and PS2 games.
Wi-Fi technology has nothing to do with the Sixaxis and motion. If the game uses the Sixaxis and it's motion sensing technology, then all versions of the PS3 will have it, whether or not the PS3 has Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is only when you want to connect to the internet if you have a wireless network.

The 60 has more memory than the 40 (60>40) and also the 60 gb boasts wi-fi technology, which means in some games you can move the controller with the game kinda like the Wii but not as advanced.

My boys say buy the 40Gb and buy your own memory upgrade and it will be cheaper. Do research online as to whether they have additional features for the difference between the two...

Besides the drop in storage capacity the 40GB PS3 will have less I/O ports and will not run any PS2 games.
60GB = 4 USB Ports, flash memory slots included
40GB = 2 USB Ports, no flash memory slots

40 GB ps3 dosent play ANY ps2 games while the 60 GB plays ALL ps2 games and the 80 GB plays SOME ps2 games.
plus the hardrive size difference and some more card slots on the 60 and 80.
so if you want to play ps2 games i would suggest trying to find a 60 gb.
