My son is getting a BS in Health Care Policy and Administration soon. He has pretty good grades (about a 3.5). He's been interested in health care work since 15, with 1000+ hrs of volunteer work in a hospital and a nursing home, plus volunteering for a US Congressman who works on health care issues (while also working summer jobs). He really likes working with senior citizens, although he's also really great with kids. He's trying to figure out how he can have a career that will pay the bills which will hopefully also be a career he can stick with for the next 50 years. He keeps being told about great sales jobs for companies in the health field, but doesn't see himself as a salesman. He wouldn't mind relocating, and has thought about working in such diverse locations as Montana and Washington, DC. His college has asked him to consider staying to get a MS in Health Care Policy. Friends have suggested law school to him. Suggestions??? Thank you.

I have a Master of Public Policy with a concentration in Health Policy from the University of Chicago, and I have been working at the nation's largest membership organization of physicians for 6+ years. It is a great way to influence health care policy at the national level and it does pay the bills. If he decides to work for a few years, (I would strongly recommend it), locating to DC would be an excellent way to gain experience and knowledge on practical matters related to health care. Once he has a couple years of experience, your son should look at the top policy schools for the best opportunities for on campus recruiting. This is a great time to be in the field. GOOD LUCK!
