Check out the waterfoul proclamation in Utah.
It is called a Wilson Snipe, and there is a season for these shore birds. I use as photo of one and have regular "Snipe Hunts" here at my work. We hand out prizes to those who find the Photo of the Snipe! Fun.
You should see the look on faces of new employees whan we ask them if they would like to get a snipe hunting license for our game.

The joke part of the snipe goes like this Old men get young children together and give them a big stick and a sack. Then tell the children about their (real life) snipe hunts and how difficult they are to get. Then elaborate on their appearance and try and make it scary. Send the kids in the woods and let them hunt snipe. Any bird, owl or other creature usually spooks the kids so bad that they run out screaming. Good way for parents to get drunk when kids are not around.

Here in Arkansas I hunt both snipe and woodland woodcock which are a close relative of the snipe.

I always laugh when people think that snipe are make believe lol

The term sniper is derived from snipe hunters. Snipe fly in a awkward zig-zag pattern when flushed making them very hard to hit. If you can hit snipe, then you are a good sniper

Do you not have Snipe in the USA? They are quite common in the UK and even more so in Ireland. A small brown marsh bird, prefers bog areas. Difficult to shoot as they are small and fly low.
There are two varieties in the UK, the Jack Snipe, latin name; lymnocryptes minimus and the common Snipe, latin name; Gallinago gallinago.

Edit; Strewth! for those like poozank who still do not believe that snipe exist, have a butcher's at;

Yep. I thought it was a joke the first time I renewed my NC hunting licence. They ask what you shot the last season and "snipe" was on the list. They started to laugh at me when I made them prove to me that it was legit.
