I think yes, it would be insulting. Food should be tasted before it is flavoured by the diner. Of course, the problem is, most people are addicted to sodium and never stop to consider what they are doing.
Wouldn't it be interesting to see the reaction of these salters if you cooked a dish piled it full of salt and then, when it was served to them, they added salt without tasting and then took a bite? I wonder what their reaction would be. I wonder who they would blame and if they would actually still eat the dish?

I don't find it insulting. My husband does this with everything. He salts bacon, ham, you name it. Since there's no way I'll cook most of my food that salty, he's pretty safe in assuming he needs to add some. Some people should stop being offended by what other people do if it's not meant intentionally to insult them.
Re: the answers by Raven and Cimex - Yes, some people actually do need to eat a lot of salt to keep their blood pressure at normal levels. I have a friend like that. Less common than hypertension, but it does exist. People always assume everybody wants everything low fat too, and that's not the case either. My mother was put on a special high fat diet when she was younger because the doctors thought she was too skinny.

I wouldn't take offense. Salt that is cooked in tastes different than salt that is put on after the food is cooked. Plus some people just like more salt than others. If you're cooking for a group, there will be some that want more salt than others. That is why people keep salt shakers on the table.

They are probably salty type people and used to doing that, it's a habit. I am a salty person, but I usually taste my food first no matter what then salt it if it needs it. Don't take it as an insult. Even if they don't like your food at all don't take it as an insult, everyone's tasts are different.

Every ones tastes are different , some like a lot of salt and others don't. You don't need salt on fish and chips as there is already salt in the fat.besides salt is bad for you anyway.

it depend on the culture and person. If they are a new chef trying out a recipe it might not be the best thing to do, if they are kind of foreign like french, italian or asian i don't think you should. But if it's someone you've known for a while or are close to. But if someone does it to you then maybe it's just that they like salt or have a differnant taste for flavoring than you, but if they do it before eating it they might just really like salty foods.

No. Sometimes people like salt on things. You don't have to taste an ear of corn to know you always prefer it with salt on it.
